How much do phone sex operators actually make?

For students that are turning to phone sex, many are attracted by the flexible hours working for easy money? Many companies require you to undergo the application process before explaining how much they will pay you, as explained in this previous post.

Premium rate business advices that you can earn up to £19.000 a year to take 15 phone sex calls a day, if they can last around 6 minutes. These are prices that are for the company rather than the individual. It is unlikely that individuals will earn such high amounts as companies only pass along a small percentage of the profit.

graph

The standard amount individuals receive is 20% of the cost of the call. This would mean a PSO working on 20% would receive £16.20 for completing 15 calls. Doing this everyday would be £113.40 a week for around 10 hours work, a very appealing prospect for students.

These figures show the potential there to be made for phone sex companies who could make vast amounts of money by employing lots of PSO’s.

However some people pose a very different idea of how much can be made through being a PSO. This yahoo chat claims “I work as a pso/text sex operator and I make around £100 a week if I’m lucky that’s working about 25 hours a week, you can earn more if you work more hours.”

Obviously the validity can be doubted on websites such as these but it is a good way to gather data as people are more willing to give information online anonymously.

There are many different ways of turning to phone sex for money based on how far people are willing to go, sex texting can still give the opportunity to earn small amounts of money anonymously with flexible hours. Students willing to use webcams and speak to clients can earn double the amount of PSO.

Website jezebel explains For the modern day sex worker, phone sex alone often doesn’t pay the bills. One Niteflirt girl’s personal website advertises that she also sells panties, offers live cam-shows, sells videos, makes custom videos and works as an erotic dancer with the rest of her time. This tweet from hash-tag #niteflirt user @xxxdynamitexxx sums it up, “only 11am—already filmed 8 new clips, then logged into #niteflirt and immediately had an intense 15 minute call. Phew, I need a nap! :)”

They go on to explain that Sallie, a Niteflirt worker had this to say: “Some Flirts get enough work to support themselves, others get no calls at all. It is NOT possible to just sign up, post a picture and get calls. It requires skills in marketing, design, writing, and basic HTML. Hard work and even luck are not enough. We see new Flirts complaining in the forum that they’re getting no calls, or begging for help. Well, it is not as simple as talking dirty and collecting a check like many people think.”

It seems that to become a PSO making good amounts of money it is important to be committed in providing a profile and dedicating time to accepting calls whenever they are offered. Based on data collected it seems unlikely people use phone sex as a full time job but can be a good source of money for students receiving student loans.

87% of people believe the rise in tuition fees has caused students to turn to phone sex

An overwhelming 87.5% of people believe that the rise in tuition fees has caused students to turn to phone sex. This result isn’t surprising considering the article written earlier in the investigation about the rise in the cost of living for students.

graph 1

The survey shows some other interesting results such as 71.43% of people approving of female students working as phone sex operators. This result is surprising considering the taboo surrounding phone sex as a career, with many pages online offering advice for people on how to overcome the embarrassment of working as a phone sex operator.

graph 2

This creates an interesting in comparison to only 25% of people admitting they would consider working as a phone sex operator; this could indicate it is prehaps a career they approve of for other people but not themselves.

10.71% of people questioned said they knew of someone who has once worked as a phone sex operator, this is surprisingly high due to the amount of people unwilling to admit they work in this career sector.

Only 29.9% of people said they had encountered advertising for phone sex positions, which suggests the advertising isn’t very successful for many companies.

“I earn an average of £2,600 – £4,000 a month” says long-time phone sex operator

Reaghan* who has been working as a phone sex operator for about 6 years now, tells us about the challenges she faced, the training process she underwent, and her views about phone sex industry as  an insider. She started,

“I became ill and had to resign my position in customer service. I looked for something I could do that would allow me to work from home and someone suggested “You have a great voice and you are the dirtiest person I know. Why not try phone sex?”, and so that was the first time I ever thought about it”.

About the interview process,

Well! I was invited to apply at a well known company and provided a lengthy communication regarding my knowledge of fetish and experience. I spoke on the phone with 3 different officers of the company I was seeking to work with before being brought on as a customer of their platform. I was asked if I would use my own pictures or provide a content model and to provide a biography for customers to review”.

“All in all, from the day I was invited to apply to the day I took my first call, was 30 days. I was not asked to undergo any training process, as I had extensive knowledge of the fetish world. But to any beginner, I would suggest, if you are going to specialize in fetish or domination types of calls, taking classes to get familiar with the general principles can only benefit your overall business.

“I earn an average of £2,600 – £4,000/month and I work for about 12 – 14 hours per day, 7 days per week, but it takes a LONG time to establish you to be able to support yourself with it. My first year, I made less than £650/month”.

“The good thing here is most of my friends are supportive but feel they could never make that leap into their own employ. Even though there is no problem with this for my friends, working as a phone sex operator may be a problem with relationships. It opens up your experiences and can be very emotionally draining. At the end of some shifts, I find myself sometimes feeling more than a little overwhelmed by the emotional connections made with clients, especially as they become more of a long-term relationship”.

According to the online survey we conducted, more than 85% of students believe that, that more students are entering phone sex industries due to the increase in the tuition fees.  She says,

There are more people coming to the industry to try and offset their financial obligations but I’m also finding more and more are not able to keep up with it because it does require such a massive investment of time and effort in order to make it a viable career”.

When I think about phone sex as an industry, “Like most industries, there are some aspects which are very empowering and positive for helping people to explore desires and have companionship they are unable to get in other aspects of their lives but there are also some shady, less positive aspects”.

“Some companies will take advantage of a PSO by offering less than beneficial compensation to someone who doesn’t know any better”.

“It seems like an easy way to make quick money but most of the younger girls are burning out faster than advertised because they are finding it harder to maintain the hours and their studies at the same time”.

Phone sex: the application process

The application process for becoming a phone sex operator is different depending on the company you choose to apply to. Most companies have an initial application, which consists of registering your name, email address, date of birth and any further experience. The next step then consists of a phone interview within 74 hours.

A phone sex blog explains phone sex operators need..

  • To have a genuine interest in people,
  • To be a natural flirt,
  • To love talking, gossiping, listening,
  • To be able to make friends fast and make people feel comfortable,
  • To be resilient, self confident, open minded and a good improviser.

The anonymousness of being a phone sex operator makes it appealing to a wide range of people, particularly students or people with part time jobs due to the flexibility of hours.

UK company chat recruit require you to send a copy of your ID once you reach the interview stage to confirm you are of legal age.

They firmly state on the website that no one will be able to start work without verifying there age through a photo ID.

Purrfect phone sex jobs require applicants to fill out a long application form consisting of 22 questions; date of birth is the 21st question they ask.

Due to the amount of actresses that are willing to work in as phone sex operators, companies don’t seem to concerned with age along as applicants are 18.

Not all companies are as reliable as this, companies such as cheap phone sex have categories on there website for different types of phone sex, one being ‘barely legal’ and ‘student phone sex’ advertising phone sex from younger girls.

Whether or not these are underage girls or just girls acting, it does prove the appeal for this type of phone sex operator. This is a category that is available on nearly all phone sex websites.

The application to become a phone sex operator appears relatively easy to complete, which is appealing to students with the wide access to the internet.

Most companies require a landline phone to complete the job; meaning students living at home are unlikely to do this type of job, but could be much more appealing to those living away from home?

Sophie a student from Sheffield said

“I would consider being a PSO due to the financial strain of living away from university, but it is not something I would tell my friends as It is too embarrassing. I don’t know what they would think about me using the landline phone for it either!”

Charlie a Birmingham student said

“I am surprised there is not more information required during the application process such as your job title. Surely they would need to know in terms of what hours you can work?”

We will be further investigating why your current employment status is not asked during the application process.

Chat recruit recommends that phone sex operators dedicate around 20 hours per week.

Is the rise in the cost of living relevant to students and phone sex?

Are rising living costs to blame?

The price of rising tuition fees has been well documented over the past year, as most universities now charge £9000 a year. Despite the rise in tuition fees, there hasn’t been an increase in the amount of maintenance loan that can be received. Many would consider this a good thing as it means the amount loan students have to pay is lower, but with the cost of living increasing every year could this be the reason phone sex is becoming more appealing to students?

An article by money saving expert martin Lewis says that Students heading to university, can expect to spend an average of £9,250 a year on the cost of living, according to research published by company LV.

A student will spend, on average, £4,159 on accommodation and £1,440 on food each year, according to insurance company LV’s study. Essentials such as household bills, books and travel will add to the cost.

According to the new Cost of University study from LV, students can expect to spend the following, on average:

  • Accommodation: £4,159 a year (£12,478 over three years)
  • Food: £1,440 a year (£4,319)
  • Leisure and clothes: £1,707 a year (£5,122), though this figure seems low, especially for London-based students.
  • Utility bills: £616 a year (£1,233)
  • Household essentials, including toiletries: £376 a year (£1,129)
  • Books and equipment: £344 a year (£1,032)
  • Travel, including going back home: £483 a year (£1,450)
  • Insurance: £129 a year (£258)

Including tuition fees this adds up to a grand total of £18.024 a year.

The University of Birmingham tells students to expect to pay around £12,894 for everyday living excluding tuition fees.

It is also important to consider that these costs are only applicable for around 37 weeks a year whilst studying at university and doesn’t include the summer months were students often go home.

To further investigate the associations between student’s cost of living and the impact this has on students and phone sex I will ensure this is a question I ask when conducting surveys and interviews.

Hollie Douglas a student at Coventry university said “Despite having a part time job, I can only spend around £15 a week on food I try my best to shop around and buy own brand foods as they are much cheaper. I always rely on my mum to send me food when I am really short of money. It can be so hard to keep in budget that phone sex is something I would consider”

45% of people have tried phone sex?!

Screen Shot 2013-02-12 at 11.14.15

Durex recently released the results of its national sex survey, with some interesting results. The survey found that 56.85% of people admitted to thinking about a lover whilst having sex, this surprisingly shows that even in the heat of the moment people aren’t concentrating on their current partner but fantasising about other things. This shows a disconnection towards sex for many people.

22.5% of the country would class texting another person within a relationship as cheating. This is interesting as if people consider texting cheating it is likely many more would consider phone sex cheating.

The results varied between counties with only 20% of people within East Anglia regarding this as cheating compared to 25.4% of Wales counting texting another person as cheating.

Perhaps the most interesting result of the survey is that nationally 45.05% of people have used phone sex, this is surprisingly high at nearly half of the population, considering it is such a taboo subject that many people wouldn’t be willing to discuss.

56.62% of people admitted they would first look online for information about sex. This shows the popularity of the Internet due to accessibility, this is useful to our investigation as it shows the importance of having a strong online platform.
