“Control the cock, you control the man”- My Phone Sex Secrets

Channel 4 has recently aired a show called “My Phone Sex Secrets” , which is about 56 year old Jenny Ainslie Turner who is a phone sex worker. The hour long documentary is full of tricks of the trade and how Jenny has found her way to easy money. Earning money by the minute and doing something she enjoys, as she claims “I never tire of talking about sex,” phone sex is a solution to all her financial difficulties.

The documentary has also focused on two students who have also opted to be phone sex workers to help fund their university expenses. *Marnie, 19 started her job as a phone sex worker when she was struggling for cash, however has chosen to leave that behind and her university as she felt being a phone sex worker has lead her to a life of loneliness. She has now chosen to photograph escorts and strippers as her career option.

Similarly Rosa, who was broke in her first year of uni, decided to try out her charms in the phone sex industry. We watched her take tips from Jenny and slowly seen her become a professional in her own right. She quite enjoyed faking orgasms and controlling men. Shes decided to stick to being a phone sex operator as its a fun way of earning extra cash.

But what do others think about this? A forum on www.mumsnet.com have been discussing it. Allthegoodnamesweretaken says

“To me it seems like the show is trying to show them as empowered women because they are taking advantage of men’s weaknesses for financial gain, when to me phone sex work is still sex work. You’re still degraded for a man who you have no emotional connection with’s sexual gratification.”

On the other hand, someone who chose this route as the job centre continuously failed to help her find employment said

“I saw a job in a sex chatline office advertised in local classifieds. It paid £12.000 a year and it was night work but it was a choice between that or workfare. Ive done workfare and ive done chatline work and guess what. Out of those two choices which were the ONLY two choices i had at that time,it wasnt the chatline that i found degrading.”

87% of people believe the rise in tuition fees has caused students to turn to phone sex

An overwhelming 87.5% of people believe that the rise in tuition fees has caused students to turn to phone sex. This result isn’t surprising considering the article written earlier in the investigation about the rise in the cost of living for students.

graph 1

The survey shows some other interesting results such as 71.43% of people approving of female students working as phone sex operators. This result is surprising considering the taboo surrounding phone sex as a career, with many pages online offering advice for people on how to overcome the embarrassment of working as a phone sex operator.

graph 2

This creates an interesting in comparison to only 25% of people admitting they would consider working as a phone sex operator; this could indicate it is prehaps a career they approve of for other people but not themselves.

10.71% of people questioned said they knew of someone who has once worked as a phone sex operator, this is surprisingly high due to the amount of people unwilling to admit they work in this career sector.

Only 29.9% of people said they had encountered advertising for phone sex positions, which suggests the advertising isn’t very successful for many companies.

“Phone sex is enjoyable work for many, but it is mentally and physically taxing”

One of the phone sex operators, a graduate, who has been working for 5 years in the same field, on a interview to Frisky says,

“Phone sex is a game of constant calculation, analysis, decision-making, creativity, and it requires tremendous amounts of empathy toward people contacting you in a state of intense sexual need. It’s enjoyable work for many, but it is mentally and physically taxing”

Now, there are about thousands of phone sex websites. Students can access these sites with ease. As seen in blogs of phone sex operators, students prefer to work as a phone sex operator, as they can work at their own comfort and can work anonymously.

With the rise in number of student phone sex workers, we can consider, an initiative taken by BBC, over an year ago, to bring to light the significant rise in the number of students turning to sex industries to pay their debts. English Collective of Prostitutes (ECP) spokeswomen, as reported to The Huffington Post said,

“Students are not only turning to prostitution. They are also engaging in phone sex and lap dancing because they are in such dire financial situation”

When we talked to the English Collective of Prostitutes they say,

“Ever since grants were done away with and loans introduced, we have been contacted by increasing numbers of students considering or involved in sex work. Considering that it is common for a student to be saddled with a debt of £30,000 + at the end of their course this is no surprise. Jobs in shops and pubs that students usually take up to cover living costs are increasingly scarce and low paid”.

“The abolition of Education Maintenance Allowance is having a particular impact on young people. Opportunities for young people to study and go to college are being drastically cut as a result. How is EMA to be replaced? Sex work will certainly be one way.”

They also mentioned how the research done by them proved students to be suffering because of debts to pay.

“A recent study of over 200 lap-dancers carried out by Leeds University found that one in three of those surveyed were working to fund education. The majority of these were younger women, with 14% working to fund undergraduate study; 6% were on postgraduate courses and 4% in further education. At a time when fees are about to increase, there is widespread expectation that more women will turn to this industry to fund their studies.”

A study by Doctor Ron Roberts of Kingston University on students’ relationship with the sex industry also found 11% would consider escort work. He said high tuition fees had driven students to work as lap dancers and for chat lines and internet pornography.”

She has also said to BBC, the number of calls they received from students had “atleast doubled” over the years.

There are a number of phone sex websites which have a separate section for college teen’s numbers for phone sex, this signifies the gradual increase in student phone sex operators through the years. On a contrary note our survey results say that, More than 80% of students have told that they don’t know anyone who has previously or currently working as a phone sex operator.

Even though there are about 25% of students have agreed that they would consider taking it up as their job.

There are many discussion threads on student sites, asking for help in figuring out reputable phone sex websites. There are a number of students out there willing to work as a phone sex operator, some for extra cash, some to pay their debts, and some even to have an adventurous leap into it.

In accordance with this, Weconsent.org and SWAAY are two of the organizations, which provide assistance and support people involved as sex workers. SWAAY, abbreviated as sex work activities, allies, and you. The site contains  real-life stories of those working in sex industries and they even conducts campaigns to support phone sex workers. They are linked to worldwide groups, to promote their cause.

Even though there seems to be a decline in this field due to advancements in the recent use of technologies like sex-cams, there a good number of students turning as phone sex workers.

“I felt like a loser, I am having serious second thoughts in it” says student male phone sex operator

The websites of some phone sex companies like Niteflirt, has a seperate platform for male phone sex operators, often named as gay phone sex operators. On this blog confessions of a male phone sex operator, Sam* who started to work as a male phone sex operator, says

“I found the listings online. I have always joked that I could get a job like that. The money was a real incentive, the thing that brought me on board. I applied, and was hired right away”.

“I am a twenty something college student. I go to parties, listen to the newest music, go shopping, go to the movies every now and then, club hop of course”  but to do my job, “I prepared a character named ‘Levi’, 22 years old, short brown spiky hair, 5’11” 150 lbs, lean and toned swimmers build with piercing bright blue eyes. On my first day, I was startled when the phone rang. The first caller hung up after 4 or so minutes. I felt like a loser. Now I am having serious second thoughts in it”.

Gemma* a female phone sex operator says “There are male operators but, it’s been my experience that they aren’t as financially successful as female operators” , it may be because,

There seems to be a definite line that men are leery of crossing insofar as talking ‘about’ bisexual fantasies and talking to a man about their bisexual fantasies. Most men are more comfortable with talking to a woman about it. And most of the time, women don’t really call phone sex”.

“There are quite a few on one of the platforms I work with. I’ve had calls with male operators in the past, as dual entertainer calls that customers have asked for and most of the time, it’s not really long term relationship types of calls. For example, I have a client that I’ve been talking to for several years and we usually talk a couple times a month. Our calls are generally an hour or so long. Working as a male phone sex operator and managing the type of financial accomplishments that a female phone sex operator can garner is a distant fetch”.

In yahoo answers, Mao* asks,

“Why are there no male phone sex operators with female customers calling them?”

Replies are,

“There is no market for male phone sex lines”.

“It’s only the developed mindset in men with social influences that dictate their behaviors. I have never done it or needed too”.

Is Technology Changing Phone Sex

There is technological advancements in phone sex. Some operators are now being asked to perform phone calls via webcam. There are several agencies that not only do phone sex but have recently introduced ‘webcam sex’. However, is webcam sex more enjoyable than phone sex? I looked at a forum on www.lovehoney.co.uk where they were discussing webcam sex. The consensus from the majority of the posts was that phone sex is better and more comfortable for those providing it, whereas webcam sex is easier with people they know or are in a relationship with. Tracey3x said

Phone sex is much more comfortable, there’s a reason why people do phone sex and that is because they don’t want people to see the real them, webcam sex is definately over stepping my limits.

FlirtatiousBaby, a female phone sex operator who uses this forum to find ideas for ‘erotic stories’ said,

So many guys go surfing the net finding girls, then turn cam on and have their cock out wanking off. Just cant see the attraction. Got to be mental stimulation and build up. Its the law! lol.

She prefers phone sex because of the creativity and imagination that is being used, they found it more enjoyable when actually creating fantasy scenarios rather that posing for someone on video.

So, is there a technological advancement in phone sex. Even though it has been introduced and there are many places that ask to do webcam sex, including many webcam sex websites, it’s not, as this forum suggests the most popular.

I’m ok to do webcam sex for one or two people that I now know on a more regular level but I can’t just pose for lots of different men that I don’t know.

Killer Bunny, a male who, despite having a girlfriend, is a also a webcam sex operator.

Webcam sex, which i do, is a substitute for the real thing, everything is better live!

So is technology changing phone sex. Yes there has been progression as webcam sex has been introduced but, judging by this forum, phone sex is still as popular as it was before, and for some, more preferred.

“I earn an average of £2,600 – £4,000 a month” says long-time phone sex operator

Reaghan* who has been working as a phone sex operator for about 6 years now, tells us about the challenges she faced, the training process she underwent, and her views about phone sex industry as  an insider. She started,

“I became ill and had to resign my position in customer service. I looked for something I could do that would allow me to work from home and someone suggested “You have a great voice and you are the dirtiest person I know. Why not try phone sex?”, and so that was the first time I ever thought about it”.

About the interview process,

Well! I was invited to apply at a well known company and provided a lengthy communication regarding my knowledge of fetish and experience. I spoke on the phone with 3 different officers of the company I was seeking to work with before being brought on as a customer of their platform. I was asked if I would use my own pictures or provide a content model and to provide a biography for customers to review”.

“All in all, from the day I was invited to apply to the day I took my first call, was 30 days. I was not asked to undergo any training process, as I had extensive knowledge of the fetish world. But to any beginner, I would suggest, if you are going to specialize in fetish or domination types of calls, taking classes to get familiar with the general principles can only benefit your overall business.

“I earn an average of £2,600 – £4,000/month and I work for about 12 – 14 hours per day, 7 days per week, but it takes a LONG time to establish you to be able to support yourself with it. My first year, I made less than £650/month”.

“The good thing here is most of my friends are supportive but feel they could never make that leap into their own employ. Even though there is no problem with this for my friends, working as a phone sex operator may be a problem with relationships. It opens up your experiences and can be very emotionally draining. At the end of some shifts, I find myself sometimes feeling more than a little overwhelmed by the emotional connections made with clients, especially as they become more of a long-term relationship”.

According to the online survey we conducted, more than 85% of students believe that, that more students are entering phone sex industries due to the increase in the tuition fees.  She says,

There are more people coming to the industry to try and offset their financial obligations but I’m also finding more and more are not able to keep up with it because it does require such a massive investment of time and effort in order to make it a viable career”.

When I think about phone sex as an industry, “Like most industries, there are some aspects which are very empowering and positive for helping people to explore desires and have companionship they are unable to get in other aspects of their lives but there are also some shady, less positive aspects”.

“Some companies will take advantage of a PSO by offering less than beneficial compensation to someone who doesn’t know any better”.

“It seems like an easy way to make quick money but most of the younger girls are burning out faster than advertised because they are finding it harder to maintain the hours and their studies at the same time”.

Phone sex: the application process

The application process for becoming a phone sex operator is different depending on the company you choose to apply to. Most companies have an initial application, which consists of registering your name, email address, date of birth and any further experience. The next step then consists of a phone interview within 74 hours.

A phone sex blog explains phone sex operators need..

  • To have a genuine interest in people,
  • To be a natural flirt,
  • To love talking, gossiping, listening,
  • To be able to make friends fast and make people feel comfortable,
  • To be resilient, self confident, open minded and a good improviser.

The anonymousness of being a phone sex operator makes it appealing to a wide range of people, particularly students or people with part time jobs due to the flexibility of hours.

UK company chat recruit require you to send a copy of your ID once you reach the interview stage to confirm you are of legal age.

They firmly state on the website that no one will be able to start work without verifying there age through a photo ID.

Purrfect phone sex jobs require applicants to fill out a long application form consisting of 22 questions; date of birth is the 21st question they ask.

Due to the amount of actresses that are willing to work in as phone sex operators, companies don’t seem to concerned with age along as applicants are 18.

Not all companies are as reliable as this, companies such as cheap phone sex have categories on there website for different types of phone sex, one being ‘barely legal’ and ‘student phone sex’ advertising phone sex from younger girls.

Whether or not these are underage girls or just girls acting, it does prove the appeal for this type of phone sex operator. This is a category that is available on nearly all phone sex websites.

The application to become a phone sex operator appears relatively easy to complete, which is appealing to students with the wide access to the internet.

Most companies require a landline phone to complete the job; meaning students living at home are unlikely to do this type of job, but could be much more appealing to those living away from home?

Sophie a student from Sheffield said

“I would consider being a PSO due to the financial strain of living away from university, but it is not something I would tell my friends as It is too embarrassing. I don’t know what they would think about me using the landline phone for it either!”

Charlie a Birmingham student said

“I am surprised there is not more information required during the application process such as your job title. Surely they would need to know in terms of what hours you can work?”

We will be further investigating why your current employment status is not asked during the application process.

Chat recruit recommends that phone sex operators dedicate around 20 hours per week.

Phone Sex Scripts Revealed!

A recent blog post online on Yahoo claimed that if you apply to be a phone sex operator, you must receive training by the company. According to the post, If the company does not offer training ‘you may want to consider working for a different company’. However most companies do offer training, which helps you to build your confidence, self esteem and helps you to work successfully and earn as much money as possible. As a beginner it’s important to follow these scripts to help you get the hang of things.

You will make a nice income if you learn how to use phone sex operator scripts to boost your performance on the telephone.

When applying to be a phone sex operator you are usually provided with practise scripts, and are encouraged to practise these in front of a mirror. However more scripts are available online on various websites. Phone sex operators usually start with given scripts but slowly with experience start to create their own fantasies and own scripts, gradually creating different characters and different scenarios. So in one call the operator may be a 21year old but for the next call the operator will act as a 60 year old. The post describes a phone sex operator as an actress. Acting out different roles each time.

Don Diva Mag have published an article on scripts and have they’re own guide on how to become a perfect phone sex operator. They say

the first thing you have to do is get in the mood, or allow yourself to be put in the mood. If you will be initiating the call – get horny -by any means necessary! Sometimes it is a little hard to just jump into a hot and steamy conversation without getting mentally prepared. Need inspiration? Dim the lights, pop in a porno, read a chapter of a sexy book (keep a copy of The Sex Chronicles: Shattering the Myth by Zane in your nightstand.) Bust out your favorite toy (don’t have one? First slap yourself, then go to http://www.adameve.com and purchase your new best friend.) Think of the wildest “sexcapade” you’ve had or wanted to have. Think of him (or her – we don’t discriminate) or whatever it is that gets you horny.

One website has a good example of a phone sex script.

GWEN AS CANDI
Thank you for calling 976-LUST, I’m Candi.  What’s your
name?

That’s a very sexy name, Bruce.  I wore something
special for you tonight.  Can you guess what it is?
Moves a stack of cards.

That’s right, Bruce, I’m wearing a thin white t-shirt
and tight cut-off jeans.  Gee, Bruce, I hope you don’t
mind, but I forgot to wear any panties

Each script and website encourages you to be as wild and imaginative with your fantasies and create moods that will sexually arouse yourself.

Online survey

To support us with our investigation process on students and phone sex, we opted to online survey as this is fast paced and could also reach desired sectors. The survey is primarily focused on student communities. The results of this survey would be helpful to find out which age group of students normally intends to turn towards phone sex industries and what is the cause. We have specifically posed a question that stands alone to find out the relation behind the rise in tuition fees and the increase in number of student Phone sex workers.

Till now, this survey has proved to be much effective as we have received responses from about 60% of students within the age bracket of 20-24. There have also been responses to our survey from about 30% of students belonging to age group of 18-20.  One of the interesting dimension that this survey has taken us through is that about

“85% of the students agree to the fact that they believe the rise in tuition fee may have contributed to the volume of students turning to phone sex for extra cash”.

If you would like to voice your views and opinions about students and phone sex please click on this link to take part in our online survey. The updates of the survey would be posted here on our site.If you would like to enter a discussion about students and phone sex with us you may tweet to us @studentphonesex or send us a message in facebook.

Phone Sex from an international perspective

wuud7

In the U.K we have quite a sexually liberal society. Whether we are listening to Rihanna’s “S&M” on the radio, looking at page 3 girls in the Sun News Paper or watching “Sexcetera” on the T.V. If our media content is anything to go by it seems Britain has relatively embraced sex openly within our society. Phone Sex is something we see mentioned on TV, advertised in magazines however when the Government run Jobcentre Plus started advertising jobs for women willing to pose naked on a webcam and engage with sex chats on the phone. The “Daily Mail” reported public outcry. Granted this is a step up from “regular” phone sex operators but it is interesting to note the “limit” of sexual exploits in our society. But how is the phone sex industry received abroad?

In Holland a country where prostitution is openly legal and has a nursery located in the middle of Amsterdam’s Red Light District phone sex would be regarded as relatively minor. While the legal status of prostitution is a reasonable indicator of a nations attitudes and/or stance on sex chat phone lines it would be tedious to go through the legal status of prostitution in every country across the world. For those who are interested in finding out more check out http://www.prostitutionresearch.com/

Other than Holland’s notoriety for prostitution and its close proximity to the U.K. it stands as relevant due to the fact that it provides much of Britain’s Freeview viewing with Live Sex Chat “Viewings”.  Recent issues were raised by Ofcom with the Dutch Media Authority over British viewers complaining that their children are able to view pornographic sex-chat phone ins on Freeview Channels such as “Babestation” and others.

In the United States of America the phone sex industry is protected by the First Amendment, which declares that Freedom of Speech is protected by the bill of rights. An example of this was seen in 1989 when the Supreme Court judged a law on banning phone sex chat lines as an infringement on the freedom of speech.

In India the Noida Cyber Cell arrested four people from telecoms company Airtel in connection with not regulating phone sex racket where customers of Airtel where sent text messages beckoning them to use their added content sex chat services

In China 97 Phone Sex Lines were shut down and 79 punished after a nationwide sweep aimed at tackling Internet pornography. The Minister of Information Industry Wang Xudong was quoted saying “This depraves social morals, and especially brings great harm to the country’s young minds,” but added that the arrests would help clean up the phone sex industry. It is interesting to note that Wang believed internet porn was morally depraved yet believed phone sex was “clean” industry in need of “cleaning up”?

So whilst china is shutting down Internet porn related phone sex chat lines to help keep them “clean” back home in the U.K we seem to be taking a different view on things. Whilst internet porn is legal here. The Women’s Support Project UK views phone sex lines as commercial sexual exploitation and therefore within the same classification of stripping, prostitution, forced marriage and trafficking.

As dramatic as the police operations mentioned above are we must remember that most these interventions were a result of breaking telecoms regulations or phone sex being linked in with web cam interactivity.

Which begs the question. How easy is it to transfer from being a phone sex operator to doubling up your résumé to become a web cam strip tease and chat star and possibly even doubling down the dark and murky road to porn and or prostitution?

Is phone sex a operating a gateway career into seedier occupations?
