How much do phone sex operators actually make?

For students that are turning to phone sex, many are attracted by the flexible hours working for easy money? Many companies require you to undergo the application process before explaining how much they will pay you, as explained in this previous post.

Premium rate business advices that you can earn up to £19.000 a year to take 15 phone sex calls a day, if they can last around 6 minutes. These are prices that are for the company rather than the individual. It is unlikely that individuals will earn such high amounts as companies only pass along a small percentage of the profit.

graph

The standard amount individuals receive is 20% of the cost of the call. This would mean a PSO working on 20% would receive £16.20 for completing 15 calls. Doing this everyday would be £113.40 a week for around 10 hours work, a very appealing prospect for students.

These figures show the potential there to be made for phone sex companies who could make vast amounts of money by employing lots of PSO’s.

However some people pose a very different idea of how much can be made through being a PSO. This yahoo chat claims “I work as a pso/text sex operator and I make around £100 a week if I’m lucky that’s working about 25 hours a week, you can earn more if you work more hours.”

Obviously the validity can be doubted on websites such as these but it is a good way to gather data as people are more willing to give information online anonymously.

There are many different ways of turning to phone sex for money based on how far people are willing to go, sex texting can still give the opportunity to earn small amounts of money anonymously with flexible hours. Students willing to use webcams and speak to clients can earn double the amount of PSO.

Website jezebel explains For the modern day sex worker, phone sex alone often doesn’t pay the bills. One Niteflirt girl’s personal website advertises that she also sells panties, offers live cam-shows, sells videos, makes custom videos and works as an erotic dancer with the rest of her time. This tweet from hash-tag #niteflirt user @xxxdynamitexxx sums it up, “only 11am—already filmed 8 new clips, then logged into #niteflirt and immediately had an intense 15 minute call. Phew, I need a nap! :)”

They go on to explain that Sallie, a Niteflirt worker had this to say: “Some Flirts get enough work to support themselves, others get no calls at all. It is NOT possible to just sign up, post a picture and get calls. It requires skills in marketing, design, writing, and basic HTML. Hard work and even luck are not enough. We see new Flirts complaining in the forum that they’re getting no calls, or begging for help. Well, it is not as simple as talking dirty and collecting a check like many people think.”

It seems that to become a PSO making good amounts of money it is important to be committed in providing a profile and dedicating time to accepting calls whenever they are offered. Based on data collected it seems unlikely people use phone sex as a full time job but can be a good source of money for students receiving student loans.

“It’s not about sexuality; it’s about them using stupid practices”: Advertising phone sex lines

As Shyla*, a phone sex operator shares in a forum,

“I am a phone sex operator who is just getting started and not having much luck. I am very good at what I do but I cannot seem to get the callers”

The reason she claims for decline in the business is due to the lack of advertisements for the business. Advertising and establishing themselves is a great task to deal with in working as a phone sex operator. The charge for advertising phone sex services in online media varies according to the trafficking opted by the client. It is usually a lot higher than what is being paid for normal advertisements. Because of these higher rates some phone sex operators prefer to work on a well built platform like Niteflirt, Myphonesite or Talksugar. But, there also problem exists. There are low call rates in this, as said in an interview with us by a phone sex operator, who has been working in the field for about 6 years,

“Some companies will take advantage of a phone sex operator by offering less than beneficial compensation to someone who doesn’t know any better”

Phone sex, as advertised by various media:

Most of the national newspapers have banned advertisements for services of sexual nature. Before this ban phone sex commercials have been present in some newspapers. Newspapers like The Sun have carried advertisements of phone sex companies. These advertisements were banned as they portrayed women’s body as a sexual object. Countries like Mexico, Spain have also banned advertising sexual content in newspapers. There are magazines who still advertise phone sex.

Phone sex commercials widely known as the late night commercials, have been there for a while in television industries. In a related forum, Laht* says

“All you have to do to stop this phone sex thing is run an advertisement on television that shows what the real sex-talkers look like”

Unlike these usual advertising, phone sex companies had also started ‘phreaking which literally means hacking of phone lines. Many calls by customers have been redirected to hot chat lines. One affected person says,

It’s not about sexuality; it’s about them using stupid practices like this to try to entice the general public to use their business. If I wanted to use a phone sex line it would take me 30 seconds on Google to find the number of one. They don’t need to have a million phone numbers all forwarding to their sex line. They’re just hoarding numbers and it’s illegal”

Websites and online Webpages are a go-to spot for majority of these phone sex companies to advertise themselves. The selection here takes place based on the number of hits and trafficking posed by the site.

A phone sex operator says,

“Marketing for phone lines isn’t difficult, per say but there are a LOT of people doing it so getting noticed is where most people run into problems”

There is a great deal of effort put in advertising these phone sex sites. Financially, this requires a lot of stability to establish themselves in this field.

The psychological profile of a phone sex worker… and the client

All over the United Kingdom and America, hundreds of thousands of phone sex based calls are issued every day, contributing to this £54 million pound a year sex line industry. But what makes these individuals actually, physically pick up the telephone and dial? The American publication the Sun Sentinel interviewed several prestigious psychology professionals and academics on the typical features and mind set of both clients and operators.
Charles Bahn, a psychology professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice claims:

It`s boredom, not stress. They`re probably underemployed — people with desk jobs who aren`t very busy because busy people don`t have time to fantasize about these situations.“

Some calls are made as a lark, but many are made by men and women who have certain characteristics in common, says Manhattan sex therapist and clinical psychologist Judy Kuriansky.
Some are obsessed with sex, she says. They`re people who frequently think about sex, talk about sex and tell jokes about sex.

“Often they work in the sex industry. Many times they`ve grown up inhibited, and this is the way they overcome their inhibitions”

But the openly amorous are not the only people who lust for telephone sex.  People with totally (non-sexual) lifestyles and jobs, who rarely talk about sex also go for titillating talk, Kuriansky says.
Often these callers are in positions of power — like politicians and, yes, police officers — who seek to exert their power in sexual situations.
Phone sex seems tailor-made for these types. These types of people can lead the conversation. There are no expectations to live up to. They can hang up any time they want. They can act out aggression and anti- social impulses“ by screaming into the phone or being verbally abusive.
Herbert Robbins, a professor of psychology at Bronx Community College, says there`s little difference between telephone sex and pornographic movies and magazines and even steamy romance novels. People afraid of real relationships, frightened of rejection, tend to seek out these alternatives.
Psychology graduate Alexandra Doherty delivered me her expert opinion on why phone sex may seem so appealing to many people and what would drive people to actually phone up. On the surface, many people would assume individuals phone up these sex lines for sexual gratification. However, Alexandra Doherty states that it is an anonymous avenue many can feel free to explore their sexuality in, as it is a ‘safe place’. It is easy to pretend you are someone you’re not when it is over the phone. Stripping or prostitution is face to face, whereas phone sex has a degree of ambiguity to it, therefore it doesn’t feel as shameful or degrading. Using phone sex lines can be an easy aspect of your life to conceal… how many people are going to have access to your personal mobile phone records?
Miss Doherty is confident that this is not a likely route for young student to slip into prostitution or otherwise, purely due to the unidentifiable, shadowy nature.

”The popularity of phone sex is swelling due to the growing zeitgeist of acceptance in society today, encouraging those to be more open about their sexuality”

Phone sex can actually be a sanctuary for some people, conversationally speaking. Gay and lesbian people unable or unwilling to ‘come out’ about their sexuality yet, can still fulfill their sexual desires… at least over the phone, perhaps enabling them to become more comfortable and confident with themselves as a person.
Alexandra Doherty states:

Those with low self esteem, who are craving emotional intimacy and for whatever reason are not getting it either mentally or physically can have an artificial stimulation which may offer some solace amongst a lonely lifestyle.
These students that ‘resort’ to phone sex may not be entirely financially focused. The same logic can apply to the actual operators. Company in any shape or form, paid for or organically given can be a god send. Phone sex may be seedy or two dimensional on the surface, but from a Psychologist’s perspective, it is a very layered and very loaded profession”.

Paedophile callers encouraged by ‘barely legal’ phone sex categories

Phone sex is widely regarded as a harmless, exciting and exhilarating experience. Adults from all ages, backgrounds and professions enjoy indulging in steamy phone calls, stimulating their innermost fantasies. Both clients and operators appreciate this unique business and as dirty as the conversations may become, clear boundaries always remain.
However, phone sex operators do occasionally received calls from paedophiles. Current phone sex operator Charlie* has been in the business for a number of years and has received only a small handful of paedophilic callers, but was still deeply disturbed by the incidences.
Phone sex chat lines such as ‘Nite Flirt’ advertise several categories for clients to choose from, including the ‘barely legal’ section. This is described as ’a way to punish your naughty school girl’ on many phone sex websites, including Nite Flirt. School girl costumes can be found in many fancy dress shops and lingerie’ stores such as Ann Summers, as uniformed role play is a well-established turn on for many people, ranging from kinky school girl outfits, to latex nurse uniforms. There are however, paedophiles who opt for the barely legal categories for more sinister reasoning.

‘’They sound like any average caller at first; asking me for my name in a polite and friendly tone. It takes a few minutes for some clients to warm up and become comfortable before allowing the raunchy nature of the call to progress, so I never normally suspect anything at first. My very first experience of a paedophile caller was when he asked me if I liked doing role play and I laughed, saying I wouldn’t be a very good phone actress if I didn’t.  But then he went on to ask if I ‘could be six for him’.

I was sure I has misheard and thought he had asked if I ‘could be sexy for him’. I asked him to repeat what he has said and I froze as he confidently asked again if I could be six for him. I felt sick to my stomach and felt rage flood through me. ‘’I’m sorry Sir, but that is a sick, immoral and disgusting request I won’t even pretend to do!’’ I hung up the phone and was so upset turned off my mobile as I couldn’t handle taking any more calls for the rest of the day. I was so shocked and realised that was a real downside to being a phone sex operator’’.

Although there are no recorded statistics documenting paedophile call-ups, phone sex worker Natalie* works for one of the larger companies ‘Lip Service’ which does not advertise or include any sections dedicated to fulfilling ‘barely legal’ fantasies.

‘’I have never received any calls from a paedophile before! I think the likelihood of a paedophile phoning is very dependent on the nature of the phone sex company. I would feel awkward operating a section like ‘barely legal’ anyway, just in-case any sick paedophiles did ever phone’’

Student Charlie* expressed how paedophiles phoning up shouldn’t deter women from working as phone sex operators. As occurrences such as these are fortunately rare there is not a great deal of documented or recorded incidences in the media.

”It is an ugly side of the job, but as soon as you suspect anything even remotely paedophilic, you can hang up”

“Control the cock, you control the man”- My Phone Sex Secrets

Channel 4 has recently aired a show called “My Phone Sex Secrets” , which is about 56 year old Jenny Ainslie Turner who is a phone sex worker. The hour long documentary is full of tricks of the trade and how Jenny has found her way to easy money. Earning money by the minute and doing something she enjoys, as she claims “I never tire of talking about sex,” phone sex is a solution to all her financial difficulties.

The documentary has also focused on two students who have also opted to be phone sex workers to help fund their university expenses. *Marnie, 19 started her job as a phone sex worker when she was struggling for cash, however has chosen to leave that behind and her university as she felt being a phone sex worker has lead her to a life of loneliness. She has now chosen to photograph escorts and strippers as her career option.

Similarly Rosa, who was broke in her first year of uni, decided to try out her charms in the phone sex industry. We watched her take tips from Jenny and slowly seen her become a professional in her own right. She quite enjoyed faking orgasms and controlling men. Shes decided to stick to being a phone sex operator as its a fun way of earning extra cash.

But what do others think about this? A forum on www.mumsnet.com have been discussing it. Allthegoodnamesweretaken says

“To me it seems like the show is trying to show them as empowered women because they are taking advantage of men’s weaknesses for financial gain, when to me phone sex work is still sex work. You’re still degraded for a man who you have no emotional connection with’s sexual gratification.”

On the other hand, someone who chose this route as the job centre continuously failed to help her find employment said

“I saw a job in a sex chatline office advertised in local classifieds. It paid £12.000 a year and it was night work but it was a choice between that or workfare. Ive done workfare and ive done chatline work and guess what. Out of those two choices which were the ONLY two choices i had at that time,it wasnt the chatline that i found degrading.”

87% of people believe the rise in tuition fees has caused students to turn to phone sex

An overwhelming 87.5% of people believe that the rise in tuition fees has caused students to turn to phone sex. This result isn’t surprising considering the article written earlier in the investigation about the rise in the cost of living for students.

graph 1

The survey shows some other interesting results such as 71.43% of people approving of female students working as phone sex operators. This result is surprising considering the taboo surrounding phone sex as a career, with many pages online offering advice for people on how to overcome the embarrassment of working as a phone sex operator.

graph 2

This creates an interesting in comparison to only 25% of people admitting they would consider working as a phone sex operator; this could indicate it is prehaps a career they approve of for other people but not themselves.

10.71% of people questioned said they knew of someone who has once worked as a phone sex operator, this is surprisingly high due to the amount of people unwilling to admit they work in this career sector.

Only 29.9% of people said they had encountered advertising for phone sex positions, which suggests the advertising isn’t very successful for many companies.

“Phone sex is enjoyable work for many, but it is mentally and physically taxing”

One of the phone sex operators, a graduate, who has been working for 5 years in the same field, on a interview to Frisky says,

“Phone sex is a game of constant calculation, analysis, decision-making, creativity, and it requires tremendous amounts of empathy toward people contacting you in a state of intense sexual need. It’s enjoyable work for many, but it is mentally and physically taxing”

Now, there are about thousands of phone sex websites. Students can access these sites with ease. As seen in blogs of phone sex operators, students prefer to work as a phone sex operator, as they can work at their own comfort and can work anonymously.

With the rise in number of student phone sex workers, we can consider, an initiative taken by BBC, over an year ago, to bring to light the significant rise in the number of students turning to sex industries to pay their debts. English Collective of Prostitutes (ECP) spokeswomen, as reported to The Huffington Post said,

“Students are not only turning to prostitution. They are also engaging in phone sex and lap dancing because they are in such dire financial situation”

When we talked to the English Collective of Prostitutes they say,

“Ever since grants were done away with and loans introduced, we have been contacted by increasing numbers of students considering or involved in sex work. Considering that it is common for a student to be saddled with a debt of £30,000 + at the end of their course this is no surprise. Jobs in shops and pubs that students usually take up to cover living costs are increasingly scarce and low paid”.

“The abolition of Education Maintenance Allowance is having a particular impact on young people. Opportunities for young people to study and go to college are being drastically cut as a result. How is EMA to be replaced? Sex work will certainly be one way.”

They also mentioned how the research done by them proved students to be suffering because of debts to pay.

“A recent study of over 200 lap-dancers carried out by Leeds University found that one in three of those surveyed were working to fund education. The majority of these were younger women, with 14% working to fund undergraduate study; 6% were on postgraduate courses and 4% in further education. At a time when fees are about to increase, there is widespread expectation that more women will turn to this industry to fund their studies.”

A study by Doctor Ron Roberts of Kingston University on students’ relationship with the sex industry also found 11% would consider escort work. He said high tuition fees had driven students to work as lap dancers and for chat lines and internet pornography.”

She has also said to BBC, the number of calls they received from students had “atleast doubled” over the years.

There are a number of phone sex websites which have a separate section for college teen’s numbers for phone sex, this signifies the gradual increase in student phone sex operators through the years. On a contrary note our survey results say that, More than 80% of students have told that they don’t know anyone who has previously or currently working as a phone sex operator.

Even though there are about 25% of students have agreed that they would consider taking it up as their job.

There are many discussion threads on student sites, asking for help in figuring out reputable phone sex websites. There are a number of students out there willing to work as a phone sex operator, some for extra cash, some to pay their debts, and some even to have an adventurous leap into it.

In accordance with this, Weconsent.org and SWAAY are two of the organizations, which provide assistance and support people involved as sex workers. SWAAY, abbreviated as sex work activities, allies, and you. The site contains  real-life stories of those working in sex industries and they even conducts campaigns to support phone sex workers. They are linked to worldwide groups, to promote their cause.

Even though there seems to be a decline in this field due to advancements in the recent use of technologies like sex-cams, there a good number of students turning as phone sex workers.

“I felt like a loser, I am having serious second thoughts in it” says student male phone sex operator

The websites of some phone sex companies like Niteflirt, has a seperate platform for male phone sex operators, often named as gay phone sex operators. On this blog confessions of a male phone sex operator, Sam* who started to work as a male phone sex operator, says

“I found the listings online. I have always joked that I could get a job like that. The money was a real incentive, the thing that brought me on board. I applied, and was hired right away”.

“I am a twenty something college student. I go to parties, listen to the newest music, go shopping, go to the movies every now and then, club hop of course”  but to do my job, “I prepared a character named ‘Levi’, 22 years old, short brown spiky hair, 5’11” 150 lbs, lean and toned swimmers build with piercing bright blue eyes. On my first day, I was startled when the phone rang. The first caller hung up after 4 or so minutes. I felt like a loser. Now I am having serious second thoughts in it”.

Gemma* a female phone sex operator says “There are male operators but, it’s been my experience that they aren’t as financially successful as female operators” , it may be because,

There seems to be a definite line that men are leery of crossing insofar as talking ‘about’ bisexual fantasies and talking to a man about their bisexual fantasies. Most men are more comfortable with talking to a woman about it. And most of the time, women don’t really call phone sex”.

“There are quite a few on one of the platforms I work with. I’ve had calls with male operators in the past, as dual entertainer calls that customers have asked for and most of the time, it’s not really long term relationship types of calls. For example, I have a client that I’ve been talking to for several years and we usually talk a couple times a month. Our calls are generally an hour or so long. Working as a male phone sex operator and managing the type of financial accomplishments that a female phone sex operator can garner is a distant fetch”.

In yahoo answers, Mao* asks,

“Why are there no male phone sex operators with female customers calling them?”

Replies are,

“There is no market for male phone sex lines”.

“It’s only the developed mindset in men with social influences that dictate their behaviors. I have never done it or needed too”.

Is Technology Changing Phone Sex

There is technological advancements in phone sex. Some operators are now being asked to perform phone calls via webcam. There are several agencies that not only do phone sex but have recently introduced ‘webcam sex’. However, is webcam sex more enjoyable than phone sex? I looked at a forum on www.lovehoney.co.uk where they were discussing webcam sex. The consensus from the majority of the posts was that phone sex is better and more comfortable for those providing it, whereas webcam sex is easier with people they know or are in a relationship with. Tracey3x said

Phone sex is much more comfortable, there’s a reason why people do phone sex and that is because they don’t want people to see the real them, webcam sex is definately over stepping my limits.

FlirtatiousBaby, a female phone sex operator who uses this forum to find ideas for ‘erotic stories’ said,

So many guys go surfing the net finding girls, then turn cam on and have their cock out wanking off. Just cant see the attraction. Got to be mental stimulation and build up. Its the law! lol.

She prefers phone sex because of the creativity and imagination that is being used, they found it more enjoyable when actually creating fantasy scenarios rather that posing for someone on video.

So, is there a technological advancement in phone sex. Even though it has been introduced and there are many places that ask to do webcam sex, including many webcam sex websites, it’s not, as this forum suggests the most popular.

I’m ok to do webcam sex for one or two people that I now know on a more regular level but I can’t just pose for lots of different men that I don’t know.

Killer Bunny, a male who, despite having a girlfriend, is a also a webcam sex operator.

Webcam sex, which i do, is a substitute for the real thing, everything is better live!

So is technology changing phone sex. Yes there has been progression as webcam sex has been introduced but, judging by this forum, phone sex is still as popular as it was before, and for some, more preferred.

“I earn an average of £2,600 – £4,000 a month” says long-time phone sex operator

Reaghan* who has been working as a phone sex operator for about 6 years now, tells us about the challenges she faced, the training process she underwent, and her views about phone sex industry as  an insider. She started,

“I became ill and had to resign my position in customer service. I looked for something I could do that would allow me to work from home and someone suggested “You have a great voice and you are the dirtiest person I know. Why not try phone sex?”, and so that was the first time I ever thought about it”.

About the interview process,

Well! I was invited to apply at a well known company and provided a lengthy communication regarding my knowledge of fetish and experience. I spoke on the phone with 3 different officers of the company I was seeking to work with before being brought on as a customer of their platform. I was asked if I would use my own pictures or provide a content model and to provide a biography for customers to review”.

“All in all, from the day I was invited to apply to the day I took my first call, was 30 days. I was not asked to undergo any training process, as I had extensive knowledge of the fetish world. But to any beginner, I would suggest, if you are going to specialize in fetish or domination types of calls, taking classes to get familiar with the general principles can only benefit your overall business.

“I earn an average of £2,600 – £4,000/month and I work for about 12 – 14 hours per day, 7 days per week, but it takes a LONG time to establish you to be able to support yourself with it. My first year, I made less than £650/month”.

“The good thing here is most of my friends are supportive but feel they could never make that leap into their own employ. Even though there is no problem with this for my friends, working as a phone sex operator may be a problem with relationships. It opens up your experiences and can be very emotionally draining. At the end of some shifts, I find myself sometimes feeling more than a little overwhelmed by the emotional connections made with clients, especially as they become more of a long-term relationship”.

According to the online survey we conducted, more than 85% of students believe that, that more students are entering phone sex industries due to the increase in the tuition fees.  She says,

There are more people coming to the industry to try and offset their financial obligations but I’m also finding more and more are not able to keep up with it because it does require such a massive investment of time and effort in order to make it a viable career”.

When I think about phone sex as an industry, “Like most industries, there are some aspects which are very empowering and positive for helping people to explore desires and have companionship they are unable to get in other aspects of their lives but there are also some shady, less positive aspects”.

“Some companies will take advantage of a PSO by offering less than beneficial compensation to someone who doesn’t know any better”.

“It seems like an easy way to make quick money but most of the younger girls are burning out faster than advertised because they are finding it harder to maintain the hours and their studies at the same time”.
